Goal of US$ 2,2 billions will be achieved!

Through July: US$ 1,3 billions; 20 millions in leathers!

Crust + Trimmed exceed Wet Blue + Salted

The export projection of the entire chapter 41 of the NCM – hides – for the year of 2007, based on the average noted during the first seven months, indicates a total amount of approximately US$ 2.2 billions, the highest amount of hide export in all its history. This grown in value noted during the first seven months, of approximately 32%, is related to the valorization of the Brazilian commodities in the world market, since, in number of exported hide, the growth is only of 3%. It is a somewhat small growth, but which represents the exit of a little more than 20 million bovine skins from the country, without jeopardizing the internal market supply, assure the exporters. In value, during these seven months, the export was of approximately US$ 1,3 billions. (see tables 1, 2, 5 and 7)

The evolution of the average value of each type of exported bovine skin – table 3 – shows that the Wet Blue hide, the one with the lowest added value and of higher exported quantity is the skin that presents the largest growth, 38%. The Semi-trimmed (Crust), which has an intermediate industrialization degree, had its average value grown also in a significant manner, 35%. And, the average value of the Trimmed hide, the one with the higher added value experienced a growth of 15%, narrowing the difference between such hide and the value of the Crust hide, and this is a result that requires a deeper analysis as the levels of the added value are quite different.

The SECEX data shows – see table 4 – that the participation related to the quantity of Wet Blue hide exported, accumulated during the first seven months of 2007, for the first time experienced a drop below 50%. Although located close to 49,36%, it should be observed that during the same period of 2006, the Wet blue represented 53,17%. The figures show that the drop in exported quantity of Wet Blue is compensated by the corresponding growth in quantity of the Crust, which reached 36,34% during the period.

This minor detail, generally unperceived in a general analysis covering the behavior of skin export, finds in COUROBUSINESS a propitious environment to give such detail its due highlight. For several years, the sector and outside of it, have been discussing means to create conditions through inducting public policies to have the export of added value skins preponderate in the exports of bovine skins. This analysis records this occurrence for the first time. In total, 50,44% of the quantity exported of hides includes Crust and Trimmed hides. The other 49,56%, correspond to export of Salted and Wet Blue hides. The difference is minimal, but is symbolic, specifically for the analyst that follows up this discussion for more than two decades.

The top ten destinations of the Brazilian hides represent practically 90% of the total exported, a data that reveals a long time concentration, in spite of the increase in number of purchasing countries. What has changes in recent years is that the leadership now is in the hands of China (uniquely) and the distance compared to the other destinations is growing fast. China buys 37% of the Brazilian leather. Italy , in the past, the preferred destination of the Brazilian hides is now in the second position with 26% of the total. In the total of the 10 major destinations, the sum of the Asian countries already represent 58% of said total. China and Hong Kong are the major buyers, followed by Vietnam , Taiwan , South Korea and Indonesia , six among the ten major countries, without doubt a hazardous concentration.
