Bovines: the exported quantity falls down; but the value increases by 25.33%

26 million units; US$ 1.6 billion in value

Crust + Finished = 51.12% of the total

 

The projection of US$ 2.2 billion of export of all chapter 41 of NCM – leather – remains valid for the year 2007. At the end of the first nine months, the exported value presents a growth of 25.33%, while the exported quantity is 0.77% smaller, both in relation to the same period of 2006. These data are related to the export of bovine leather, which represents the almost totality of chapter 41.

It is interesting to observe the contention of the growth of the exported quantity and analyze if it is an isolated fact or a tendency, for the slaughtering of bovines continues growing. Even so, the exported quantity is expressive, in absolute terms, around 26 million units of leather. These data may be seen in tables 1 and 2, as a summary.

The evolution of the average value of each type of exported bovine leather – table 3 – shows that Wet Blue leather, the one of smallest added value and of greatest exported quantity, continues presenting a significant index of value growth.

In relation to 2006, on average, its value has gone up 33%. The Semi-finished leather (Crust) has valorized itself, equally on average, by 30%. As to the value of the Finished leather, the one of the greatest added value has kept the growth in the range of 15%, being in US$ 84.25, next to the historic level of US$ 90.00. The average value of Crust (US$ 75.47) reveals a new tendency of price, being quite above the historic level.

The data of SECEX show – see table 4 – that the relative participation of the quantity of exported Wet Blue leather, as accumulated in the first nine months of 2007, continues smaller than the sum of Crust and Finished, 51.12%, of which 36.77% of the highest added value. This is effectively good news and what one expects is the progressive increase of the percentile of participation of the leathers of greater added value.

In the previous edition, we highlighted that one has discussed for years, in the sector and out of it, how to create conditions, through inducing public policies, to make preponderant the export of leather of greater added value. The market, as one observes, by itself, is showing the results expected. One must accompany the behavior of the following months. If the tendency continues, one may even imagine temporal goals of enlargement of the participation of Crust and Finished in the total exported.

The ten biggest destinations of the Brazilian leather – see table 6 – have represented, until September, 84.7 of the total exported and 89.6 of the quantity. This one continues to be an excessive concentration, without a perspective of change in the medium run. The leadership, in relation to the exported quantity, continues being of China , with more than 36% of the total, followed by Italy , with 26%.

Six Asian countries are among the ten biggest destinations, in the total they represent 47% of the quantity exported by Brazil . And these countries buy, preponderantly, leather of smaller added value.

Table 7 reveals interesting data. For example: a kilo of Wet Blue is worth around US$ 3.00. The one of Crust leather, US$ 14.43, and the one of Finished leather, US$ 15.32. These values do not have any coherent relation with the comparative level of added value.
