NCM (hide) cap. 41 Export in 2007 is record

Exported quantity decreases; value increases

Mean value exceeds expectations

 

 

When the aim to be reached in 2007, of US$ 2.2 billions of export for the entire NCM cap. 41, was established in the end of 2006, COUROBUSINESS did nothing but auscultate entrepreneurs of the segment and project the growth percentage of 17%. 2006 export – US$ 1,878 billion – has positively surprised and the addition of 17% seemed, at first sight, a reckless exercise. But an aim is not a myth, in spite of being a very frequent challenge. The favorable worldwide market incited a significant valorization of Brazilian raw material value – specially bovine hide –, as you can see on table 3, and which has made the aim become real.

 

Tables 1 and 2 show exported quantities and values with a highlight for bovine hides. Until November, Brazil exported 30.321.154 bovine hides, (7.29% less than 2006), this is, less 2.384.157 hides, which is enough for manufacturing about 59 millions pairs of shoes. The most important in this situation is to verify that such decreases concerned specially low added value hides – salted and wet blue. Only for wet blue, decrease was around 4.7 million unities.

 

Regarding the total exported value, the accumulated until November represents around 22% more than 2006, surpassing the amount of US$ 2 billions (see table 5). Only for bovine hides – see table 2 – the accumulated value reached US$ 1,977 billion.

The comments above induce to the conclusion that something is changing on Brazilian hide export. If you confer COUROBUSINESS' collection you will verify that, over the last nine years, one of the most discussed subjects is the one concerned to the need of a better qualification of the hide export, by adding value. On table 4, with accumulated data until November – there is a result which must be celebrated, even more, it must serve as parameter to 2008, as a tendency to be followed. In other words, this result cannot be only an episode.

 

During many years, Brazilian export was unequally shared between 70/80% of low added value hide; and 20/30% of high added value hide. The Wet Blue hide export area has conditioned the footwear-leather chain export subject which has culminated on imposition of restrictions to its outgoing from Brazil . We reached the end of 2007 (accumulated data until November) in the following composition: low added value, Salted and Wet Blue hide export (47,58%); high added value, Crust and Achieved hide export (52,41%).

 

A good governmental support, by intelligent policies of financing, incentive to the modernization of national plants, improvement of hide quality, trade promotion, can in few years reverse the composition which has imposed restrictions to the Wet Bleu outgoing. It would de enough, however, not to allow retrocessions.

It is always and interesting exercise, even if it is repetitious, to talk about the destiny of hide export. Italy keeps leading when the subject is exported value, 27.96% of the total. Concerning to quantities, Italy is at the end of the queue, leaving leadership to China , destiny of 36.36% of Brazilian hides.

 

If we look only at the exported quantity, Asia is six of the ten greater destinies, totalizing 56.77% and everything suggests that it will be soon the destiny of two thirds of Brazilian hide export. Regional concentration can always be a risk and entrepreneurs know that.

Tables 7 to 12 – organized by AICSUL – Association of Tannery Industries of Rio Grande do Sul – show distinct data about Brazilian hide export. It is important to highlight a datum from table 7: the most expensive weight of Wet Blue (US$ 3.27), is 4.77 times higher than the weight of Achieved hide, which have the higher value out of Brazil (US$ 15.61).
