Record in value and quantity

2007 hide export – US$ 2,193 billions

The last 13 years – 1995 to 2007 – which include all Fernando Henrique Cardoso government and the five first years of Lula government, show an increasing tendency of hide export – CNC Chap. 41 – which culminates in 2007 surpassing the US$ 2 billion dollars barrier. By the way, in the 2007 first edition, COUROBUSINESS risked that import aim mark in 2007 would be US$ 2.2 billions. It was 99,68% right.
Table 1 and the graphic below show the hide export behavior comparing to footwear export. Coincidentally, the US$ 2 billion barrier was also surpassed by footwear segment for the first time in 2007. You can read comments about footwear export in another article, but to visualize footwear export together with hide makes evident the increasing potentiality of both segments, and hide export – as raw material for footwear production – results no negative effects in footwear export.

An interesting element can be observed in such data, and it is regarding to the behavior of exports of both segments in the last four years, period in which Real is very valorized with regard to dollar. From 2003 to 2007, export is too much higher than the thirteen years average, which was US$ 1,053 billion for hide and US$ 1,673 billion for footwear. Even if cambial relations were unfavorable, as exporters say, than the thirteen years average is positively affected by the export behavior in the last four years.

 

2007 versus 2006: higher added value hide export preponderates

 

           

Table 2, below, shows bovine, ovine and caprine hide export, by hide number, in 2007, comparatively to 2006. Bovine hide export, the one that is really interesting to the analysis, was of 32,869,539 unities, lower than 2006 export, and the most expressive quantitative slump occurred in Wet Blue hide export, about 13.79% less than in 2007. Totalizing, Brazil exported in 2007 about 1,709,980 hides less than in 2006, however it has reached the higher revenue, as we will show below.

When bovine export is qualified by hide sort, the result is encouraging. Table 3 sustains, in the end of 2007, a trend that has initiated in the beginning of that year, in which higher added value hides became the export preponderance. Wet Blue export finishes 2007 representing 46.64% of the total, versus participation of 51.43% in 2006. And the Crust + Achieved export was a little bit over 53%. It is a good evidence.

If bovine hide export has decreased 4.95% in quantity, we can verify that in value it admitted an elevation of about 19.66%, which is a natural reflex of the export growth of higher added value hide and of its valorization in foreign market. Bovine hide export has brought to Brazil US$ 2.1 billions dollars, as shown in table 4, highlighting the Crust export growth.

Table 5 shows the mean value of the four kinds of exported bovine hides. The Wet Blue mean value has growth 27.35%. The Crust mean value, 29.44% and the Achieved, 15.52%. The value relation between Achieved and Wet Blue hide, which was already close to 3, was in 2007 of 1.88 times. The growth of the Crust hide mean value needs a better analysis, because it was very close to the Achieved hide value in 2007, and this is not usual.

2008 Aim

           

The evaluated aim of export of all the chapter 41 of NCM for 2008 is US$ 2.5 billions, although eventual damages on foreign trade generated by American economy crisis are not deeply known. The aim, possible, does not risk Brazilian footwear export, which, by the way, is descendant concerning to export of footwear with hide funds, which could be a little bit over 45% of the total. The aim is only the quantification of the purpose intended to be reached, but it is not a myth.
