Exports of 2008
Brazil lost US$ 300 million regarding 2007 and US$ 500 million regarding the target
In quantity, Brazil lost about 7.5 million of leathers/year
Prospects for 2009 are not good

 

November has not reflected yet the effects of the global crisis on the real economy of all countries buyers. The slump in the export quantity of bovine leather was expressive (less than 23.55% in the accumulated from January to November), maintaining the trend that had been registered throughout the year. However, the slump doubled in value, reaching the end of November accumulating less 10.99%, with amazing slump in value of Wet Blue export – 39.54% – reflecting the slump of 42.88% in quantity exported of this type of leather. The decrease of Wet Blue export reflects already the reduction in the demand of the U.S. market for leather for furniture, reached by the real estate crisis which is affecting the country since the end of 2007.

If the numbers of export accumulated from January to November show already a considerable slump, the perspective for future is disturbing also. This analysis has been in mid-December, when it was already known that the export in December will have a higher. It is therefore a framework that tends to be worst, because the effects of the financial crisis have already reached the economy of Asian and European countries, traditional demanders of Brazilian leather. The negative reaction in chain is not foreseeable in relation to the slump dimension only, but there is the expectation that it must overcome the current levels of 23.55% of reduction in the quantity of exported leather.

Until November of 2008 Brazil exported 23,180,930 of bovine hides, that is, less than 7,140,224 hides than in the same period of 2007. In value, the accumulated in 2008 is US$ 1,760,330,766. In the same period of 2008, the export in value has already been higher than US$ 2 billion.

In early 2008, because of the result of export of 2007 (US$ 2.2 billion) and favorable expectations which there are still, the target was set at US$ 2.5 billion to the total exports of chapter 41. The reality, however, has been distanced from projections and total export of 2008 will not even reach US$ 2 billion and might be even lower than US$ 1.9 billion. (see tables 1, 2 and 3, below).

The numbers of table 4, below, deserve brief comments. The first relates to the consolidation of the growth of exports of Achieved leather, which should close the year representing almost 50% of the total. Why? The world market demand resulted in such numbers, in addition, of course, to the natural desire of the entrepreneur of developing from the export of leather with lower to a higher added value, which can ensure a greater commercial profitability and security. The Wet Blue, on such analysis, plays an important role, because it acts as a kind of business card of the new exporter. He slowly arrives to the market, as Wet Blue exporter, and opens doors that allow his development. Nobody can say that the export evolved to Achieved leather due to the export of Wet Blue, and what would be the degree of influence of such taxation, as well as it is not possible to say if the export of Crust is exclusively Crust.

It is possible to keep export in this level of participation of added value, and even to expand the presence of the hides of higher value, without the need for taxation of Wet Blue, which has the perverse effect of transferring private resources to the public segment which could be applied, by the companies, in projects of investment and technology for a higher industrialization.
